THE PRAEMIUM IMPERIALE CELEBRATES ITS 30TH EDITION
The Praemium Imperiale, the
most prestigious art award in the world, announced the laureates of its 30th
edition a few weeks ago. This prize was
created in 1989 by the Imperial Family of Japan to award “the outstanding
contributing to the development, promotion and progress of the arts” (Praemium
Imperiale, 2005), as well as to cover the areas of achievement which are not
included in the Nobel Prize: painting, sculpture, architecture, music and
theatre/film. In the past editions, more than 150 personalities of the arts had
been recognized such as Federico Fellini, Frank Genry, Norman Foster, Andrew
Lloyd Webber, Daniel Barenboim and most recently Plácido Domingo, Mikhail
Baryshnkiov, Rafel Moneo and Martin Scorsese. And this year, in its 30th
edition the following artists and creatives will join the selected list of
laureates: Pierre Alechinsky (Painting), Fujiko Nakaya (Sculpture), Christian
de Portzamparc (Architecture), Riccardo Muti (Music) and Catherine Deneuve
(Theatre/Film).
