THE RIGA JURMALA MUSIC FESTIVAL, KEY FOR RIGA´S CULTURAL-ARTISTIC REVOLUTION OF THE 21ST CENTURY

Last Sunday, I attended the recently created Riga Jurmala Music Festival(RJMF), which in its inauguration edition is already gathering some of finest orchestras in the world (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra) as well as an interesting selection of alternative smaller performances and solo concerts. The venues which have been selected to become the headquarters of the RJMF are the no less than the jewel crownsof the performing arts scenario in both cities, such as the Latvian National Opera, the Great Guild or the Dzintari Concert Hall. Precisely, this architectural gem located on the shores of the Baltic Sea in the resort town of Jurmala delivered an outstanding night of classical music conducted by the Russian concert pianist, conductor and composer Mikhail Pletnev through the vibrant accords of Bizet´s L´Arlesienne, the emotional performance of Latvian renowned cellist Mischa Maisky and the brilliantly performed suite of Prokofiev´s ballet Romeo and Juliet. Therefore, I cannot wait to see the future of this festival alongside the Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art (RIBOCA), Riga International Film Festival or the RIXC Art and Science Festival to captain the Riga´s Cultural Revolution of the 21st century, to give back to this city the cultural-historical weight that corresponds to it.
