LATVIA´S CENTENARY. A MONUMENTAL EXHIBITION IN RIGA

Since 2018 Latvia is celebrating their 100thanniversary since their independence in 1918, right after the First World War. As a small country between European giants, they have had a tough history suffering continuous invasions and seeing how their territory became the battlefield of both World Wars. Nevertheless, the result of these socio-political swings, Riga had become a crossroads of cultures and a key point of northern Europe. Nowadays, as part of the European Union, this country is experiencing a new rebirth celebrating their freedom and its desire for modernity. An example of it is the monumental project “Latvia´s Century. Museums for Latvia´s 100thanniversary”, an exhibition that is taking place at the National History Museum of Latvia until mid-2021. It is made from almost 1.500 elements from 68 museums all around the country and it is divided into eleven sections to narrate the turbulent history of this territory: since the mid-19thcentury until contemporary Latvia, going through their War of Independence (1918-1920) against the Germans and Russians, the crazy twenties in Riga, Karlis Ulmanis´s totalitary regime as well the fateful fifty years of Soviet oppression. Definitely, an essential visit for any visitor to Riga.
